The Winter Hush – etching

From a limited edition of only 15 hand-printed versions. Each one is varied because of the hand tinting and is therefore unique.
As a woodland girl, I’m drawn to a tree tunnel. And this winter scene really lends itself to the etching process. It shows a lifelong love of woodlands, the excitement of fresh snow and a particular quiet that comes with snowfall. All you can hear is your feet crunching through the icy top layer. Sometimes you can have an audio response to an artwork, right?!
To make this etching, I use a home-made acid of copper-sulphate combined with salt and water to etch into aluminium. This corrodes the surface of the plate where I have scratched into it and removed protective wax. I add ink then remove any excess from around the etched areas. Then the inked plate is run through a traditional printing press under damp archival paper.
