• It’s as if natural elements enter the materials, spilling over into my work to emphasise our emotional response to landscape...

About
Helen Arthur

When a landscape becomes meaningful to you, it gets under your skin to create vivid memories. My paintings and process capture that…

There’s a kind of wild light where I live and work – here in the Brecon Beacons. This impacts on my creativity in an inescapable way. The paintings aim to communicate atmosphere and impact above the reality of the scene.

Every layer of paint and each bold brushstroke or detailed mark invites you to reconnect with how you feel, fully immersed in nature.

Listen to Helen’s podcast interview giving insights into how she transformed her creativity into a way of living.

We’re distracted by objectivity, and that takes us away from our personal voice in art. Once you’ve recognised that, I think you can really open yourself up to interpretation.

It all started here on the Welsh border

You’ll find me in my stone-built studio in the remote Olchon Valley, under the shadow of Offa’s Dyke on the ridge of Hatterall Hill. The Cat’s Back and Skirrid mountains bookend the ridge.

What a privilege to live in this magical part of the world – perched on the border between England and Wales, UK (which sums up my mixed heritage perfectly).

If you’re ever in the area, you’re welcome to visit any time.
