The harp-shaped hills – print

The title of this painting is classic Dylan Thomas, don’t you agree? I’ve lifted the phrase from A Child’s Christmas in Wales, his memoir-poem.
There’s so much in this quotation. The harp is iconic to Welsh culture (along with choirs), and sound really does travel differently in these big Welsh hills. Oh, and the sandstone beacons do actually form fin-like peaks, just like a harp… So it’s really a perfect title for the design of this painting where thickets and trees have carved a snaking harp shape into the hillside. The way hedges form patterns in the landscape does mesmerise us. There’s something here about how we humans have worked with the contours and natural shapes around us, even when creating property boundaries.
