Wuthering Beacons

I can’t help myself when painting skies, they always seem brooding. This painting was inspired by views looking down to Crickhowell and Llangattock in south Wales. A storm was coming but there were glimpses of golden light on the land, an almost spiritual sight, as I drove from up high, steeply into the river valley. Moody panoramic views just have to be painted. And of course, the title here nods to the atmosphere of the gothic novel, Wuthering Heights.

I added salt to the base layer of watercolour here and it created a wonderful grainy texture.
