Lone Tree, Black Mountains (original)

Under Hatterrall Ridge, by Offa’s Dyke on the Welsh border, the scrubland turns marshy and sparse. This lone tree signifies an eerie beauty to me, a little melancholic, but also proud and dominant over the undergrowth.

Although I sketch outdoors and photograph constantly, a lot of these landscapes come from my imagination, shaped by my love of the Black Mountains. I worked in layers of purple under these greens and yellows to give the painting depth before adding oil pastel highlights.
