Abstracted hedge scene by Helen Arthur, handprinted and mounted, 65 x 35 cm
From a limited edition of only 15 hand-printed versions. Each one is slightly varied and therefore unique.
You’ll find examples of hedge-laying (or “pleaching”) across Herefordshire and England in general. Here though, in the Welsh Marches, so close to the border, hedges are laid in the Brecon style.
This etching was inspired by a photo I took in my own village, Longtown. l loved working up a yin-yang balance between positive and negative space to create the woven effect of the hedge in winter. To look closely at these hedges, and this print, is like meditating.
To make an etching, I scratch into recycled plastic then work ink into the scratched surface. I remove excess ink from around the scratched drawing. Then the inked plate is run through a traditional printing press under damp archival paper.
