Heather on the top, Offa’s Dyke

Fine art print on archival paper of a Welsh Marches landscape painting by Helen Arthur. From an edition limited edition of 30, 64 x 36cm.

Here, heather glows in the sunlight as clouds lift after a rainstorm.

Trees can’t really grow, high on Hatterall Ridge, where Offa’s Dyke path marks the boundary between England and Wales. But  the heather, along with bracken and winberry bushes, are tough. The wash of deep purple when the heather blooms up on the hillside always cheers me up.

This painting was primarily made without brushes: I lay down layers of acrylic paint applied with rollers, then worked with ink followed by an oil pastels layer. I often finger-paint to get an atmospheric skyline.
